A Little Tweaking

Sometimes all it takes is a little change to step things up a notch.

Over the holidays Sweet Miss was home from college, and I thought it would be a great time to paint upstairs. I wanted a dusty blue/gray, Baby Girl chose the blue in the carpet, then switched to a brown.

Colorful Carpet

Sweet Miss embraces color and wanted something very bold. The MR pronounced all of our choices horrendous, so we were back to square one. Ah, but Sweet Miss was in the painting mood, so instead of walls we started on bookcases.

Remember we had bookcases in the corner of the hangout room?

Mess

Before Thanksgiving, we moved things around a little.

TV

While I liked the positioning, I was thinking they would look even better in a nice matte black finish. We had some paint leftover from the chalkboard wall, and hey it had to be durable, right? This paint is made to be written on and erased over and over again. It said it was meant for every surface on the can. Well, for better or worse, we painted the bookcases. And they look good.

Bookcases

The rug makes so much sense with the black entertainment unit, and the bookcases feel like they belong.

From the Side

Unfortunately, the paint keeps scratching off. I do believe a bit more prep work would have saved us a lot of headaches in the long run. I see sanding and spray paint in the future when the weather warms up. For now, we will look at them from afar and smile at their perceived beauty.

Maybe they’re like my dad used to say “good enough for government work.” Of course, that’s a rather horrifying saying now that I’m a grown up, paying taxes, and realizing that he worked for a giant in the aerospace industry for over 30 years. Oh for the innocence of childhood.

While we had the chalkboard paint out, the MR was able to do a little upgrade. When we switched the heating system from baseboards to the heat pump, the thermostat on the chalkboard wall became obsolete. He removed it and now the girls have an uninterrupted space to fill with creativity.

Chalk Wall Collage

There’s a different sheen to the patched area, but it’s much less noticeable in person, and once they cover it in chalk, it’ll totally disappear. My favorite part of the wall might be these on/off directions by the light switch. I imagine guests get a little confused at times, so Baby Girl decided to help them out.

Painted any furniture lately? Do you have tips for how to make it last?

  1. Oh the merits of prepping before hand. A coat of primer would have help immensely. Remember my red bathroom? Well I did not know to primer first, so it took 3 coats of red, and it still is not even, and that was over a white painted wall. Primer must be the painter’s godsend.
